Tape #29

Johannes Michelson: Turning a Range Rider Hat

Run Time: approx. 1 hour 30 minutes

This is an interesting tape. To turn a hat that you can actually wear is quite an undertaking. Johannes takes you to the woodpile to select and cut a blank for the range rider hat. He then brings you into the shop to the bandsaw and explains in detail how to prepare the hat blank for the lathe. He shows how to set it up to be mounted onto a faceplate. He turns a hat start to finish and shows his technique for turning very thin walls using a light and watching the translucency. He does the entire turning using mostly 1/2" and 3/8" bowl gouges. Also a 1" gouge for roughing. After finishing the turning he takes you through the whole bending process that turns the turning into the finished hat. This is a very interesting tape.
